Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids (AAS) are a class of drugs that are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. They are known for two key properties: their anabolic (muscle-building) effects and their androgenic (masculinizing) effects.

AAS function by binding to androgen receptors in cells, which then stimulates an increase in protein synthesis. This process is crucial for muscle repair and growth, allowing the body to build more muscle tissue. Additionally, AAS can reduce the effects of cortisol, a hormone that breaks down muscle, and can increase red blood cell production, which improves oxygen delivery to muscles. Understanding these biological mechanisms is the first step toward a more informed approach to fitness and performance enhancement.
